Hello everyone – I can’t believe that this is our last term this year!
This week we have been following a special topic – Denmark. A little while ago some of the schools in our area took part in a ‘World Cup draw’ during which they all drew out a team – ours was Denmark. Now that the World Cup is starting, we have been finding out about our chosen team and we will be following their progress through the tournament.
We started our week by finding out about the World Cup tournament itself. During our PE lesson we had a go at trying out some of the skills needed by the players – dribbling, passing and shooting – Mrs Langford was very impressed with our skills!

We also had a go at making our own World Cup medals. We looked at some pictures of medals from previous tournaments and had a go at designing our own. We then made them out of salt dough ( 8 hours worth of baking in Mrs Langford’s oven!) and painted them gold because we are all winners. Here are Ellie and Joshua showing off their medals:

On Tuesday we started to learn about the Vikings who travelled from Denmark a long time ago. We had a go at making Viking helmets using papier-mache – it was very gooey but great fun! They’re not quite finished yet – more photos to come:

Here’s Joe and Samuel with a Viking longship that they made using Mobilo:

We made Vikings swords and axes using card and foil – but were are not going to fight with them because that’s not what we do in 1S! Joshua and Joshua even managed to make Viking swords and axes using multi link – well done for independent thinking boys!

Abigail and Jacey had a go at making Viking boats from tin foil and experiementing with them to see if they would float! – do you think that they did?

On Wednesday we found out about a very famous Danish writer called Hans Christian Anderson. We watched an animated tale of one of his stories ‘The Little Mermaid.’ Mrs Langford told us that in the original version the Little Mermaid died – after a discussion we all decided that we liked the updated Disney version with its happy ending better!
We also thought about what we would choose to be if we could be half creature-half person like the Little Mermaid – there were some very weird ideas! We also made our own character finger puppets so that we could retell the story to our families and friends. Here’s Charlie and Liberty working hard on their puppets:

Lastly on Friday, we did some investigations into the the new World Cup flavour crisps – Mrs Langford always seems to manage to get food into a topic! Some of the flavours tasted a bit strange.

Joshua’s comment was very true: ” some taste better than they smell but some smell better than they taste!” Couldn’t have put it better Josh.

Here’s the table of our findings – can you work out which crisp flavour was our favourite?

Well again I am finishing with another “what a busy week!”
Next week we will be starting our new and final topic of ‘Buildings’ – more to follow soon. Bye for now – I’m off to bed I think after such a busy week! Mrs L.
